Located in bustling Mong Kok, Kam Wah Cafe is famous for serving up one of the best pineapple buns in Hong Kong. Being a big fan of pineapple buns, this place was definitely on my list.

Spending most of our time on Hong Kong Island, it was quite a drastic change when we exited the subway into Mong Kok. Endless crowds of people, people selling things on the street and food stalls everywhere! If we weren’t with our local friends, I don’t think we even would’ve been able to find Kam Wah – there’s no English signage.

Kam Wah is your typical Hong Kong-style café. Seats are tightly packed, service is efficient and the food comes at lightning speed.

Most people come to Kam Wah for their famous Pineapple Buns with Butter. For those unfamiliar with the Chinese pineapple bun (aka bor lor bao), there isn’t actually any pineapple in it. The name stems from its resemblance to the pineapple (but you be the judge).

This was unlike any pineapple bun I’ve ever had. This fluffy bun had a fairly thick golden crust. When biting into the crust, it was surprisingly crunchy and had a cookie-like texture to it. You’ll notice that everyone orders it with a slab of butter in it. It’s definitely the way to go!

We also ordered some Egg Tarts which were another big hit. The bright yellow hue of the filling gave it a very artificial feel but looks aside, this was delicious. The filling was eggy with just the right amount of sweetness and I loved the flakey crust. The egg tarts are another must order at Kam Wah.

Up next was an order of Fried Chicken Wings. They were nice and crisp on the outside while still juicy on the inside. The wings were good but nothing particularly noteworthy. I find that most HK-style cafes make solid chicken wings. Apologies for not snapping a photo of them. I must’ve been too caught up in the fury of food that arrived at our table!

For a more substantial dish, we ordered the Pork Chop with Tomato Sauce on Rice. We initially wanted to order the baked pork chop on rice but our server sold us on the pork chops served with sauce made from real tomatoes. But when it arrived, I think we were all a little disappointed that it wasn’t of the baked variety we were hoping for.

But one bite in and we forgot all about that baked pork chop rice. The sauce was delicious, the pork chops were cooked well and all-in-all, this was a really tasty dish.

We finished off our meal with an order of French Toast, one of my favourite dishes at HK-style cafes. It comes with a thick piece of butter on top which quickly melted onto the toast. As you can imagine, this isn’t the kinda place you eat at if you’re counting calories. We ordered a lot and by the time we got to the French toast, it was quite cold. But still tasty nonetheless.

There’s certainly no shortage of HK-style café’s like this one in Hong Kong but Kam Wah’s pineapple buns and egg tarts make it stand out from the rest.
