Growing up, I hated savoury pies. The only savoury pies I was familiar with were the soggy, pasty messes that came from the freezer and were nuked in the microwave. Sound familiar? Well, a visit to the Pie Commission (@PieCommish) will certainly change your outlook!
The Pie Commission specializes in gourmet handheld savoury pies and is located on the Queensway in Etobicoke. They are primarily a take-out joint as they only have a couple stools inside their small storefront. If you drop by on a nice day, you can enjoy their offerings on a couple picnic tables just outside their space.
All their pies are made daily from scratch and in-house. They pride themselves on using only natural ingredients and their savoury pies are made with an all-butter crust. If you’re not ready to eat your pie immediately, their pies are available frozen too. Just pop ‘em in the oven at home and voila, you’ve got some delicious pies for dinner.
They offer five main pies (including a veggie option) with some rotating seasonal specials. During my visit they were offering a lobster pie but we decided to stick with some of their mainstays.
The first pie that caught our eye was the Braised Beef Rib Pie – mushroom, sweet potato and potato with homemade veal stock and red wine reduction ($7.45). The tender chunks of braised beef sat in a delicious gravy with bits of soft sweet potato.
While I enjoyed the filling, their incredible all-butter crust stole my heart – it was definitely one of the best pie crusts I’ve ever eaten. It also held up quite well against the filling too. Super flakey, buttery and all-around delicious.
The other pie we shared was the Chicken Cheddar Bacon Mash Pie – roasted garlic cheesy mash potato in the pie with mushroom & leek ($6.95). It contained a good amount of moist chicken mixed into a garlicky mash. Between the two savoury pies we tried, I thought this one would win me over (I’m a sucker for garlic anything) but I preferred the beef rib.
The Pie Commission has a pretty extensive list of sweet pie offerings so I couldn’t resist ordering one. My first choice, the PB banana cream, was already sold out so I snagged the last Strawberry Rhubarb Pie ($5.95) which came with a generous crumble topping the pie. I absolutely loved this! The filling was perfect – it wasn’t too sweet and had the perfect amount of tartness from the rhubarb.
Their website doesn’t lie, they really do make bloody good pies! One bite of their ridiculous all-butter crust and you’ll understand the hype.
