The recently opened Barrio Coreano marks the fourth addition to Playa Cabana’s (@PlayaCabana) family. Playa Cabana’s popular restaurants around the city serve up fun Mexican fare and the Koreatown location of this newest spot has a clear influence in its menu.
Before I get to the menu, let’s talk about the space – it just feels like a cool place to be. Loud music in a dark space with a red glow from all the neon signs in the room. With its grungy décor and long, narrow space, it kinda feels like you’re in a back alley. Despite the narrowness of the space, there’s plenty of seating which is a definite plus since they don’t take reservations.
Like I mentioned, the menu is definitely influenced by its Koreatown location. On the menu, you’ll find dishes like K-mex slaw, grilled calamari with kimchi and Korean-inspired tacos. Korean and Mexican cuisine’s just work so well together!
Last week, I attended Barrio Coreano’s media preview and had the chance to sample some of their offerings. Here’s a look at what we tried:
Chips and Guacamole. Nothing beats fresh guac!
Yuzu Tuna Taco
Korean Beef Taco
Chipotle Kampungki Chicken Taco
Grilled Octopus Taco – with wasabi salsa
The taco highlights for me were the Chipotle Kampungki Chicken and Korean Beef. The large chunks of chicken were lightly battered and topped with shredded radish, green onions, onions and jalapenos. The Korean beef was equally delicious – tender pieces melt-in-your-mouth beef topped with refreshing pickled veg and cilantro. Watch out, this one is deceivingly spicy!
With delicious cocktails, a trendy space and fun tacos, it looks like Dave Sidhu (executive chef and owner of the Playa Cabana chain) has another hit on his hands!
