Serving up seasonal and sustainable local fish, I dropped by Red Fish (@redfishresto) for their weekly Sunday night Fish Fry.

Ken Samuel (@inyourmouthTO) organized a tweet-up at the restaurant, located on College street, two blocks west of Ossington. As usual, he organized a fantastic event with a great turnout – I’m pretty sure we took up the entire space!

Red Fish took over the space which was the former home of Mitzi’s on College and is brought to you by chef David Friedman who previously worked at Fishbar. As I mentioned, what makes Red Fish special is their dedication to using sustainable fish and local ingredients.

The Sunday night Fish Fry takes place weekly and costs $18 per person. The dishes are served family style with your choice of 2 sides. If you can’t make it out here on a Sunday, their regular menu has some tempting items which include steelhead trout rillettes, Peruvian style ceviche and a sharing dish they call “Chef’s Bored”, described as “we play, you enjoy.”

Now… onto the food! We started off with some Salad which was your standard garden salad with veggies which tasted nice and fresh.

The fried fish came on a large platter – served family style. The fish of the evening consisted of Catfish, Silver Bass, Rainbow Trout and Smelt, all of which were cornmeal crusted and pan-fried. I liked that they were all lightly fried which allowed them to retain their great flavour. My favourite components were the catfish and silver bass.

For some carbs, we had a side of Mashed Potatoes which weren’t anything to write home about.

I think we all agreed our favourite side was the other carb dish, the Fries. They were fried well and ridiculously addictive. The dish was placed next to me and needless to say, they disappeared quickly.

The last side we had was the Black Eyed Peas. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of these in general but they actually weren’t too bad so I guess that really says something.

If you find yourself dinner-less on a Sunday night, Red Fish’s Sunday night Fish Fry is worth checking out!
