After finishing up lunch at Hawksworth, Mike and I took a short walk over to Thierry (@thierrychocolat), located in the heart of downtown, Vancouver. Known for their handcrafted beautiful desserts, we were looking forward to satisfying our sweet tooth here.

The best part about this place is that they’re open everyday until midnight. Perfect for those late night cravings!

The dessert display

Walking into the café, I was like a kid in a candy store. I was practically drooling over their gorgeous display of cakes, tarts, macarons and chocolates. If you’re feeling like something savoury, Thierry also has a selection of sandwiches, quiches and soup.

The macaron display

There are a few tables inside the café as well as tables outside on the small patio. But the place isn’t big, so I imagine it may be difficult to get a table during peak hours.

The interior

Since we had just eaten lunch, we only ordered one piece of cake to share, the Tiramisu – mascarpone sabayon + coffee/Kahlua soak ($6.75). Thierry had many gorgeous cakes and tarts such as the chocolate caramel cadeau, passion fruit mousse and savarin but since the tiramisu came highly recommended by my friend, Dave, we went with his recommendation.

The Tiramisu

We weren’t disappointed! First of all, this was the prettiest tiramisu I’ve had – chocolate panels along the side of it, topped with chocolate shavings and wrapped with bow. The tiramisu was light, fluffy and had just the right amount of sweetness to it. I enjoyed it so much, I bought another one to go.

Inside the Tiramisu

Given that Thierry is well-known for their macarons, we gave two of them a try. The prices are pretty standard for these French treats – $1.95 each, $13.45 for a 7-pack and $21.95 for a 12-pack. The two we tried were the Coconut and Salted Caramel Macarons. They had a thin, crisp exterior and were a little chewy in the middle. Flavours were also fine. All in all, just fine. But I’ve had better…

The Salted Caramel & Coconut Macarons

I also grabbed an Apple Tart – puff pastry & caramelized apple ($5.75) to go. Unlike tarts I’m used to, this one had an incredibly thin puff pastry layer as the base, topped with an equally thin layer of sliced and caramelized apples. It was a very light dessert which struck me more of a breakfast item than a dessert. While I thought it tasted fine, it wasn’t worth the high price tag. Not something I’d order again.

The Apple Tart

Overall, I can’t say I’m in love with Thierry. The tiramisu was the only thing that hit it out of the park for me. Perhaps I’ll have to try more of their offerings to make a fair assessment… until next time!

I usually find the macarons are way too sweet for me.
That tiramisu though… Wow! I’m glad you came to the same conclusion as I did. I’m meh about the chocolate panels, but that fluffy interior is perfection.

Yeah, I didn’t love the macarons here. I’ve had much better elsewhere. As for the tiramisu, I felt the same way about the chocolate panels (Mike ended up eating most of them). Probably cause we both don’t like our desserts too sweet. The tiramisu itself was perfect – thanks for the rec 🙂
