Located in the heart of Yorkville, Mike and I dropped by MBCO (Montreal Bread Company) for a light lunch before doing some shopping. There used to be a location in the TD food court in the financial district many years ago but that didn’t last very long. I remembered enjoying the food (albeit on the pricey side), so I was hoping this location wouldn’t disappoint.

Roasted Chicken and Brie Quesadilla

This MBCO has a little patio out front which would be great for the summer. Unfortunately when we came it was way too cold for that.

The minimalist décor inside suits the neighborhood, with its clean white walls and soaring ceilings.

They serve up a variety of sandwiches, wraps, pastries and desserts, all for your viewing pleasure in their glass display cases.

Since everything in the display case looked so delicious, it took me a while to decide. In the end, I went with the Roasted Chicken and Brie Quesadilla – with leeks, spinach, onions and aioli ($11.99). After ordering and paying for your food, you have a seat and they bring the food to you.

They heated up my quesadilla and dressed it with a red onion, red pepper and parsley topping which was a nice addition to the dish. I always get a little worried when ordering chicken since more often than not, it’s on the dry side. If you’re wondering why I ordered this anyway, it’s because I felt like having a quesadilla and all the other ingredients in it sounded delicious.

Thankfully the chicken wasn’t too dry and all the ingredients worked together perfectly. A delicious quesadilla and the better of the two items we ordered.

Mike instantly knew what he wanted when he saw the Classic Steak Sandwich – served with aged cheddar and grilled eggplant with a splash of aged balsamic syrup over foccacia bread ($11.99). The presentation was simply adorable!

Although the balsamic syrup drizzle really bumped up the presentation, it made the sandwich incredibly messy to eat. It was drizzled in such a way that we couldn’t grab the sandwich without touching it… it was really sticky too! I wish they had just put it inside the sandwich instead.

The steak was cooked well but was a little on the chewy side and although we couldn’t really taste the eggplant, the sandwich itself was pretty solid. It also came with a side of garlic aioli which was a nice surprise. I think we can all agree that garlic mayo just makes everything taste better!

Overall, we enjoyed our lunch here. However, be warned – the prices are on the high side which isn’t surprising given its prime location in Yorkville. We paid around $27 including tax for our two items – not great value. But if you’re willing to pay, it’s a great lunch spot!
