Globe Earth has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while. So, when I saw a coupon for it on one of those group-buy sites, I snagged one and made my way over to its convenient Yonge street location, just a block north of Rosedale station.

Complimentary biscuits

The dining room was quite spacious and had a warm feel to it. It looked like a lot of people here were on dates and I could see why, given its dim and intimate atmosphere.

They started us off with complimentary buttermilk thyme biscuits. This was a pleasant surprise! I love it when restaurants start off with something a little different from a simple piece of bread. Although I enjoyed the warm biscuit, it filled me up quite a bit, so it was a good thing we only ordered one appetizer.

After going through the menu, one thing that caught my eye was John’s Elk Carpaccio – with caper berries, thunder oak mousse ($12). I can’t remember when I’ve seen elk on a menu, so Mike and I decided to give this a try since it was something different.

Elk Carpaccio

The carpaccio had a bit of a gamey taste, but we both really enjoyed it! It also came with a creamy, cheese mousse which complimented the carpaccio nicely. If you’re not afraid of a gamier meat, I recommend ordering this.

For my main, I went with the Everspring Duck Confit – Ontario plum ginger ravioli, mustard greens, heirloom carrots ($24). The skin was nice and crisp while the meat was incredibly tender and flavourful. Definitely one of the better duck confit’s I’ve had. The dish also came with a plum ravioli which I didn’t love. Although the pasta itself was fine, I found that the filling had a strange taste to it.

Another side that the duck confit came with was mustard greens. I actually really like this vegetable but I don’t see it served very often. The ones served here were cooked perfectly and were delicious.

On their menu, they have an entrée called “Canada’s Finest Plate” which is described as “the best of what Canada has to offer.” Today’s “finest” was pickerel with a beurre blanc sauce. Initially, Mike thought about ordering this since he wanted something a little lighter.

But who were we kidding? When it came down to ordering our entrees, he decided at the last minute to go with the Ontario Game Choucroute – wild boar, venison frankfurter, rabbit, house bacon, sauerkraut ($24). And no regrets! Everything in this dish was delicious. The wild boar sausage and venison frankfurter both had great flavours and were complimented nicely with the sauerkraut. However, the star of the dish was the bacon-wrapped rabbit which was incredibly moist and tender. Loved every bite!

We also ordered a side of Caramelized Brussels Sprouts and Bacon ($6). They have several other side dishes including Yukon gold frites, steam whistle baked beans, spiced mashed pumpkin and chili honey glazed broccoli. Ordering one will cost you $6 but you can order three for $15.

The Brussels sprouts were Mike’s choice as I’m not a huge fan of them. Surprisingly, I found them to be delicious (and so addictive!) and I think they just may have changed my mind about Brussels sprouts. These ones were a lot smaller than the ones than I’m used to and of course, the bacon didn’t hurt either.

Overall, we had a great experience here. It’s been a while since I’ve really enjoyed every dish I had at a restaurant. Its mid-range prices, warm service and intimate atmosphere makes this a great date spot.

It was really good – a nice surprise! And yes, being close to a subway station is a major plus…especially now that it’s getting colder
