One day during our New York trip, Mike and I decided to make the trek out to Brooklyn. Our first stop was Williamsburg for breakfast at Pies ‘n’ Thighs, about a ten minute walk from the first subway stop after the Williamsburg Bridge.

Old Fashioned Donut

Pies ‘n’ Thighs is a small restaurant filled with kitschy, mismatched furniture, serving up southern comfort food. The kitschy furniture seemed appropriate given that the restaurant is run by hipsters.

They have a small display case at the counter with baked goods for those grabbing food to go. The display also contained a number of delicious looking donuts, including a pumpkin one, in time for Thanksgiving. The donuts were staring back at me so I couldn’t resist  – we started off with an Old Fashioned Donut ($2). I loved the crusty exterior of it which was covered in sugar which nicely contrasted the soft, moist interior. Delicious!  It was a pretty large and dense donut, so I’m glad we only ordered one to share.

Bacon Banjo

For my main, I went with the Banjo – eggs, bacon and cheese on a biscuit ($5). Without the bacon, it would have been $4, but since bacon makes everything better, I chose to add it for an extra buck to make it a bacon banjo.

Sure, it didn’t look huge (it was only $5, after all), but it certainly packed a punch. Bacon, egg and cheese – you really can’t go wrong. I made a bit of a mess when I bit into the banjo as I burst the egg yolk which spilled out everywhere, so be warned. Overall, a delicious breakfast sandwich. My only complaint was that the biscuit itself was a bit hard on the outside. I think I would’ve preferred it a bit softer.

Chicken & Waffles

Mike ordered their famous Chicken & Waffles ($10). Their fried chicken certainly lived up to the hype. The skin was crisp and fried to a perfect golden brown and the meat was moist, juicy and tender. One of the best fried chickens I’ve ever had. This was better than the one at Clinton St. Baking Company, which we tried the day before.

Adding a bit of hot sauce to the chicken gave them an extra oomph (not like they really needed it). Simply delicious! As for the waffles, we could’ve gone without these. The dish came with two square buckwheat waffles which were just too dry for my liking. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the cinnamon butter that topped the waffles.

Overall, we thought this was a great little brunch spot. The prices are very reasonable (especially for New York standards) and the food was delicious. If you ever find yourself at Pies ‘n’ Thighs, don’t forget to order the fried chicken… and save room for a donut!

Haha I love doughnuts! You’ll see my post later about Doughnut Plant in NYC. Mike and I ate like 5 between us. Delish.
And yeah I was really impressed with the chicken, but not so impressed with the waffles here. iHop? Meh, never was a huge fan.
