After reading about Lola’s Commissary’s famous cheesecake-stuffed French toast, I knew I had to come here for brunch. Located on Church, just south of Bloor, the restaurant is in an old converted Victorian house. They have a little patio out front and a warm, cheery interior.

Grilled Cheese Eggs Benny with Lola's Potatoes

They specialize in lunch and brunch so they’re only open until 3pm everyday. I came for brunch and had some trouble deciding on what to order since there were so many things on their menu that sounded great. But once the server informed us that one of their special’s of the day was an grilled cheese egg’s benny, I was sold. This Grilled Cheese Eggs Benny came with poached eggs and spinach covered with hollandaise all on top of a Challah-bread grilled cheese sandwich.

I love eggs benny and I love grilled cheese sandwiches, so this was an easy choice. The grilled cheese was amazing. They use what they called “Lola’s cheese blend” and it wasn’t too greasy. I hate it when restaurants serve up a grilled cheese sandwich which is a soggy pile of grease. I also really liked that they used challah bread instead of regular white bread. As for the eggs benny part of the dish, the eggs were perfectly poached and the hollandaise was good, but not great. Just needed a little bit more flavour to it. I definitely could’ve just gotten a plain grilled cheese, which is on their regular menu, and been quite satisfied.

Brunch Bowl

Most of their dishes are served with your choice of soup, salad, frites or Lola’s Potatoes. I went with Lola’s Potatoes, thinking they must be good if they’re named after the restaurant. It consisted of mostly sweet potatoes with some regular potatoes thrown into the mix and contained a blend of Indian spices (garam masala). I wasn’t a huge fan of them as I prefer my potatoes crispier.

My friend Jo ordered  the Brunch Bowl – crispy sweet and new potatoes topped with chorizo, sautéed spinach, mushrooms, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese & 2 cooked eggs how you like them ($13). I was thinking of ordering this too, before the server told us about the specials. The potatoes were pretty much the same as the ones that came with my dish but with the delicious toppings, they weren’t bad at all. The potato mix contained mostly sweet potatoes but I would have preferred more regular white potatoes for this savoury dish. Despite this, I still enjoyed the brunch bowl.

Eggs Your Way

Since Jo wasn’t very hungry, the plan was for Chris to eat half of her brunch bowl. Since he didn’t think it would be enough, he also ordered the Eggs Your Way – 2 eggs cooked your way, smoked bacon & toast ($9). I don’t have too much to say about this since it was your basic breakfast.

Now, onto what we came for: Lola’s Stuffed French Toast – Challah French toast stuffed with homemade vanilla cheesecake topped with a seasonal fruit compote ($12). There’s a mini one available for $7 and in hindsight, we really should have ordered that one instead since we had trouble finishing the full-sized one. Today’s seasonal fruit compote was nectarine, which was surprisingly nice. It was actually my favourite part of the dish. I found the French toast to be a tad on the dry side, but the compote certainly helped. The cheesecake filling was decent but I would’ve preferred it to be a creamier filling. Overall, I thought it was good…but I expected it to be a lot better since it sounded so epic. Luckily our entrees more than made up for it.

I really did like that nectarine compote! Everything was just really… really rich! Maybe something lighter to balance it out would have been nice. Ah well!

True…but you did order a side salad. I don’t come to brunch to eat a salad 😛

I had the same feeling about the cheesecake stuffed French toast! It sounded so amazing and decadent, but it didn’t live up to my expectations.

I’m not sure if you’ve been to Zoe’s Bakery & Cafe on King Street, but they have a Strawberry Cheesecake French Toast of some sort. I went last year so don’t remember much but it was good from what I can remember, lol.

Oh yeah? I’ve been to Zoe’s before but I didn’t realize they had brunch items. Thought it was just salads and sandwiches. Guess I’ll have to check it out again.
