One Friday evening, when Mike felt like Greek food for dinner, I suggested Mezes in Greektown. I had an enjoyable meal there the last time I was there, maybe four years ago. We arrived just before nine and they were pretty busy. Luckily they had a table for the two of us and we were seated immediately.

Assorted pites - spanakopita, Tirokafteropita, pantzaropita

I hate that all the restaurants in Greektown have such a touristy feel. I find this is also the case with Little Italy. So many restaurants to choose from, but so few of them actually serve up a great meal. So, I was really hoping Mezes was as good as I had remembered.

We decided to go with the Assorted pites – A sample of all their pites: Spanakopita, Tirokafteropita and Pantzaropita ($8.95). The first one we tried was the Pantzaropita, which was filled with diced beets, leeks and Skordalia. This had a great flavour and we both really enjoyed this. This was my favourite of the three. Next, we tried the Tirokafteropita, which was filled with a blend of feta cheese, hot peppers and yogurt. Flavour-wise, this was just okay. I didn’t really taste much of the hot peppers, which would’ve provided a nice kick to it. Lastly, we tried the Spanakopita, the savoury spinach pie with feta cheese. This was the only type of pite I’ve actually had before, since it’s the most common. I didn’t really enjoy this one too much. It was just too salty for my liking. I think the only one I’d order again would be the Pantzaropita.

Grilled Kalamari

We were debating between the fried and grilled kalamari, and settled on the Grilled Kalamari – Fresh grilled kalamari, dressed with a balsamic vinegrette and topped with fresh onions ($13.95). The kalamari was done very well. It was nicely grilled and wasn’t chewy at all. I also really enjoyed the balsamic vinegrette and the green onions served on top were a great compliment to the dish.  Overall, a great dish.

Since we ordered two starters, we decided to share the Pork Souvlaki Dinner – Served with salad, roast potatoes, and rice ($16.95). The pork was a tad on the dry side, but when eaten with the tzaziki sauce, it wasn’t too bad. I really enjoyed the tzatziki and wished I had some pita bread to finish it off. The potatoes and rice were pretty standard. Nothing really to write home about. I love Greek salad, and this time was no different since it’s a difficult dish to screw up. Overall, just an okay dish.

The service wasn’t anything special, nor was the food. It was a rather disappointing experience given that I remembered having such a great meal here several years ago. I don’t think my most recent meal here will keep me coming back.

I was there a couple years ago … it was good. For some reason, they gave us all free nice pens.

That’s random! But yeah, I was here a few years ago too and remembered it being better. Nothing was terrible, but nothing really stood out either. I should’ve gotten the saganaki… I remembered loving that!

Tsk tsk. It’s all in the ordering. Let’s do Mezes the next time we get together for dinner. It’s by far our favourite Greek resto. Also, the best Spanikopita that I’ve had is at Akropolis. Not really a restaurant. More like a pastry/pie shop. YUM. Give that one a try.

Sure! I think last time I was there I actually went with you and Steve. I couldn’t remember what I had that time, but I remembered it being quite good.
And thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have to give Akropolis a try. I love spanikopita… and pastries… and pies!
