One afternoon I felt like having something light for lunch, so I suggested sandwiches. Somehow, we ended up at Black Camel, a sandwich joint which serves up anything but light sandwiches! Located just across the street from the Rosedale subway station, I’ve always been tempted to pick up a sandwich every time I walked by. The aroma of their brisket and pulled pork always makes my mouth water.

The restaurant itself is really tiny with limited seating, so a lot of people opt for take-out. At Black Camel you order one of their basic sandwiches, which include the beef brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, seared steak and a vegetarian option (tomato, pepper, arugula and eggplant). Each of these sandwiches cost $7.00 and includes your choice of one sauce. Choices of sauce include their BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo, hummous, pesto mayo and “charamoula mayo” (a Moroccan-inspired mayo). You also can add extra toppings for $0.90 each, which include caramelized onions, roasted eggplant, coleslaw, sautéed mushrooms and a few others.

I decided to go with the Slow Roasted Beef Brisket Sandwich. According to their website, their brisket takes five days to make. After giving them a dry rub, they leave the briskets to marinate for three days, and then slow cook them for 12 hours. After that, they let the brisket rest for 24 hours. Quite a process!

For my sauce, I chose the Black Camel BBQ sauce and added an additional sauce – the chipotle mayo and an extra topping – caramelized onions. The combination of the brisket, sauces and caramelized onions was amazing. I particularly enjoyed the flavour of the BBQ sauce, which was primarily sweet with a bit of a tang from a bit of vinegar. As for the brisket, it was extremely tender and just melted in my mouth.

Mike ordered the Pulled BBQ Pork Shoulder Sandwich. According to their website, the preparation is similar to the brisket, in that it takes several days to make. He chose the Black Camel BBQ Sauce and added coleslaw to his sandwich. Similar to the brisket sandwich, the pork was ridiculously tender. Guess it’s all a result of their slow cooking process. Given that the pork was so tender, the coleslaw was a nice contrast and added a bit of crunch to the sandwich. While this was a solid sandwich, we both preferred the brisket sandwich.

Sure, the sandwiches are a bit on the pricey side (around $10 with the extra toppings), but they were large, filling and delicious! I’d recommend dropping by for lunch if you’re in the Rosedale area.

    you should try the seared steak with their pesto mayo! Their americanos are to die for.
