Insomnia

This was actually our second attempt at coming to Insomnia for brunch. On our first attempt, we arrived at noon with a group of 6, but unfortunately it was completely packed, so we went elsewhere. On our second attempt we arrived as a foursome at 11am, and were lucky to get seats immediately. We were seated at the back of the restaurant on couches with a coffee table to eat off of; it was a nice and cozy space at the back.

7 Numbers

7 Numbers is decorated with odds and ends and has a real neighborhood restaurant feel to it. Interestingly enough, after walking into such a homey and eclectic place, this was the last place I expected to see iPad menus! This was the first time I had been to a restaurant which used iPads, and although it was definitely neat at first, it got a little annoying having to share a menu. Luckily, the menus were also written on the blackboards on the walls of the restaurant.

Drake Hotel

Mike and I came here on a long weekend Monday. When I called to make a reservation the day before, I was told they didn’t take reservations for brunch, as it was on a first-come-first-served basis. Their website indicated that they accepted reservations, but I guess this isn’t applicable to their brunch and I could see why. When we arrived just before noon, it was packed! We put our name on the waitlist and waited about 20 minutes for a table. We probably would have been seated a bit quicker if we had opted to sit on the patio; however, it was a little chilly and looked like it was going to rain, so we decided to wait for a table indoors instead.

Auberge du Pommier

If you’re looking for a romantic restaurant for a special occasion, try Auberge du Pommier – just make sure your wallet is full before coming! The restaurant is located just off Yonge Street near the York Mills subway station and has complimentary underground parking. Upon entering, we were greeted warmly by the hostess who checked our coats for us. The inside of the restaurant was dimly lit and had a very romantic ambiance to it. I found that it wasn’t too loud here even though they were pretty busy.

Gilead Cafe

Mike and I arrived at Gilead Café on a rainy Sunday morning for brunch. The building is quite unassuming on the outside and is tucked away on Gilead Place, a small street that resembles an alleyway. As we entered, we noticed that there was an area catered to the take-out crowd. The vitrine was filled with prepared foods, cheeses, pates, salads and desserts. I was afraid we’d be in for a long wait without reservations but, surprisingly, we were seated immediately after our arrival just before 11:30, right along a wall lined with mason jars containing what looked like preserves and pickled vegetables.
