Mike and I had a late start to the day as a result of daylight saving time. Unfortunately, it seemed like everyone else also had a late start as we arrived at Mitzi’s on College around two o’clock to find the restaurant absolutely packed. At the back of the restaurant, we waited in a large seating area full of other table hopefuls. Servers came by offering us drinks while we waited. We ended up waiting for about half an hour before getting a table for the two of us.
Mitzi’s menus are printed on paper, with the blackboards on the walls listing the daily specials. It seems like their menu regularly rotates; some of the menu items were different from the online menu. It also took me a while to decide on what to order; several of their menu items sounded very appealing, like the curry lamb omelette, or the goat cheese & pesto scrambled eggs.
I settled on the poached eggs on fishcakes with crab sauce, finished with spring onions ($13.95). The dish was served with home fries, fruit (cantaloupe, grapefruit and pineapple) and buttered bread (choice of rye or sourdough bread). Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy my dish; the fishcake in particular as I found that it had a strange taste to it. The home fries contained onions and were covered in some sort of sauce, which I thought weren’t bad, although Mike enjoyed these more than I did. In the end, while the serving sizes looked decent, I was still a little hungry after finishing my meal, which rarely happens. Mike can attest to this as he normally ends up eating half my meal!
I made Mike order Mitzi’s famous oatmeal buttermilk pancake ($13.95). Having read so much about their famous pancakes, I knew we had to order this. The toppings on their pancakes seem to vary from time to time. Today’s was topped with Bailey’s Irish cream cheesecake and was served with maple syrup and fresh whipped cream. The pancake was very dessert-like and tasted amazing! It was a single, extremely dense pancake. It was about an inch thick, and definitely isn’t the light and fluffy type of pancake we were accustomed to. Mike, who can always finish his meal, couldn’t finish it all due to a sugar coma.
Overall, I thought our experience was a hit and a miss. Although I wouldn’t order the poached eggs with the fishcake again, I would certainly come back for the oatmeal pancake. Especially given the great reviews I’ve read about this place, I’d definitely give this place a second shot.
